Alberto Carvalho

Alberto Carvalho is the superintendent for Miami-Dade Public Schools, the nation’s fourth-largest school district. Carvalho has been committed to supporting academic excellence for all children since 1990, first as a classroom science teacher, later as a school site administrator and national advocate for secondary school reform, and now as a key member of the superintendent’s cabinet, advising the Miami-Dade schools’ chief on community relations, budgeting, legislative issues, and more.

In 2005, Carvalho led the establishment of The Parent Academy, which provides parents with the necessary resources, information, and educational opportunities to foster a community-wide demand for excellence in public schools. In 2007, he secured grant money for Miami-Dade to create a global collaborative of like-minded school systems, cities, and multi-national corporations as part of the Educational Council of International Cities.

Carvalho has received the Cervantes Outstanding Educator Award, and he has been acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education as a leader in the New American High Schools Initiative. He holds a BS in biology/biomedical science, a masters in educational leadership, and is a doctoral candidate. He is married with a teenage daughter.
