After reports surfaced that Miami Northwestern Senior High principal Charles Hankerson would announce his resignation today, the principal announced to the student body he was staying on.
Over the intercom, Hankerson said he would be the school's principal till the end of the year.
School district spokesman John Schuster confirmed Hankerson would remain the high school principal through graduation.
After that, Hankerson has requested a transfer.
``He wants to spend more time with his family and we will honor that,'' Schuster said. ``We will work with him to ensure a smooth transition.''
Hankerson could not be reached for comment.
The announcement came days after Hankerson fired celebrated football coach Billy Rolle as the team prepared for the postseason. The dismissal drew sharp criticism from alumni, who had clashed with Hankerson over athletics before.
Hankerson reinstated Rolle three days later. But it did little to quell alumni outrage.
Rolle, who led the Northwestern Bulls to a national championship in 2008, later said the dismissal was the result of a misunderstanding between the two men, and that it had happened ``in the heat of the moment.''
Rolle also said the two had ``resolved the issue.''
A 16-year school administrator, Hankerson is considered a no-nonsense principal and disciplinarian. During his three-year tenure at Northwestern, he oversaw schoolwide improvement on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Tests and brought in a group of top, young teachers.
Students, upset by rumors Hankerson was leaving, were planning to rally in support of the principal Wednesday.
