Rhee’s not coming to Florida

DECEMBER 6, 2010 · POSTED IN EDUCATION, FLORIDA, LOCAL NEWS, NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS

Looks like the controversial D.C. schools chancellor, an anathema to teachers, will announce on Oprah that she’s got much bigger plans than working for Gollum and taking charge of Florida’s schools. Per Politico‘s Mike Allen:

EXCLUSIVE: Michelle Rhee, the former D.C. schools chancellor, will announce on a pre-taped “Oprah” segment today that she is taking her brassy education-reform ideas national by starting an advocacy group that will draw on the natural grassroots power of teachers, parents and pupils. Rhee will be meeting with teachers to seek input, as well as parents and pupils. She outlines her new plan on the cover of this week’s Newsweek, which is being kept under wraps until after “Oprah” airs in Chicago this a.m. (Yes, we tried Union Station last night.) Rhee’s new website goes live at 10 a.m. ET.

Rhee will still be part of Gollum’s education transition team, along with Patricial Levesque, who heads Jeb Bush’s education foundation. If current Florida Department of Education chief Eric Smith is not retained, I’d guess Levesque would have the inside track, which for teachers, probably isn’t much better than Rhee…
