Florida education commissioner Smith joins bipartisan group pushing school reforms
One of the first nuggets today from Jeb Bush's education summit in Washington, D.C., has Florida education commissioner Eric J. Smith teaming with the top education officials from Louisiana, Indiana, Rhode Island and Virginia to form Chiefs For Change.
The newly announced bipartisan group, of which Smith will serve as vice chairman, is touted as an opportunity to share the success stories of Florida and the other states with education leaders seeking new policies to guide their change efforts. Recall, Bush already has been hard at work pushing his model, including school grading, to several states with a high degree of success.
"Chiefs for Change represents an important step by educational leaders throughout this country to join together to create better academic outcomes and educational opportunities not just for students in our respective states, but for every child in the nation," Smith said in a prepared statement.
"By working together, we can pool our expertise, passion, experience and drive to develop collaborative, working solutions to the issues being faced by our schools. My colleagues in this organization are among our nation's strongest reform-minded educational leaders and I am proud to be a part of this tremendous effort. Now is the time for bold and intentional reform of our educational system; our children deserve it and our nation demands it."
