Fl’s Race to the Top committees take shape (superintendents, teachers, administrators from Central Florida on these panels)

The state committees that will help devise and put in place the planned Race to the Top reforms include a number of Central Florida educators, according to information the Florida Department of Education released today.

The committee on “student growth” – how to measure it and how to use it to judge teacher quality — hasn’t been named yet, and it could be the mostly closely watched.

But the seven others are now staffed.

Lake Superintendent Susan Moxley, Osceola Superintendent Mike Grego and Seminole Superintendent Bill Vogel are each on a committee, as are a few teachers and district administrators from Lake, Orange and Seminole.

The committee on “teacher and leader preparation” has a number of professors, including one from UCF, and a number of teachers, including Megan Pankiewicz, an English teacher from Winter Springs High in Seminole.

During last year’s contentious debates about the Race to the Top grant program, Pankiewicz wrote a thoughtful essay — which eventaully caught the attention of DOE folks — on how teachers needed to be a part of this reform program. You can find that essay here:Mrs Strangethought FEJ article

RTTT is such a joke…its like giving away chicken sandwiches to teachers…oh yeah they have already done that! You can be the best teacher in the state, but if your students do not care about their grades, or in this case the FCAT scores, you will not get paid. All of this for $1 million a year for 4 years. It sounds like just a lot of chicken sandwiches to me! Top performing counties do yourself a favor and get out of RTTT Now while the getting is good. Send a message to the DOE…Enough nonsense and chicken sandwiches!

The first teenager who costs my wife or me one penny will see his parents hauled into court. I will file a lawsuit against the parents of any child that costs me money because they chose not to learn. Watch out what you wish for, merit pay supporters. Things are about to get ugly.
