Miami New Times - Miami News - Riptide 2.0 - Print Version

Halloween night in Coconut Grove is a well-known annual mad house, and police are out in full force. Though, this year it seems that City of Miami police officers may have gotten out of hand with their use of force on partying patrons. A YouTube video has been making the rounds in city hall showing police violently punching suspects and seemingly picking revelers out of the crowd at random and throwing them to the ground to be handcuffed. Last night, CBS4 ran with the story on their 11 p.m. news cast, but in their infinite wisdom doesn't even link the video on their website. Here's the entire video that's sending waves through city hall and has now sparked an internal investigation.

Warning: There's graphic violence and some obscene language.

The video opens with several City of Miami police officers trying to handcuff a downed man while surrounded by a loud crowd. It's not known why the man was brought down in the first place, but someone in the chant was already yelling something about Rodney King so it's possible there was previous violence not caught on tape. Other people are yelling that the man did nothing wrong.

At one point a woman in little more than a pink tutu and bra enters the fray. Next we see her, she is on the asphalt being handcuffed while police grab at her legs to subdue her, and is latter seen being manhandled around by police.

Later another man is pulled from the crowd and thrown violently down by police officers. One officer holds the man back while another violently and repeatedly punches him in the face.

Later, a heavyset and bald police officer seemingly at random pulls a man from the crowd wearing a 300-style gladiator costume and forcibly throws him down on the road.

Other police officers are seen shoving random members of the assembled crowd.

"What you see makes you wonder if the police officer went beyond the call of duty," City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado told CBS4.

Regalado has called for a full investigation into what happened before the camera started rolling, while a police spokesman tells the station that, "Internal affairs is looking into it to find out what happened on that scene and why."

see is this kind of behavior that drive citizens not to support the system, not to trust those who "protect us", the corruption drives people to riot. i'm surprised it didn't happen in the grove. Mayor Regalado better get his ass on this, the only way to get these politics moving is through tough talk banging they're heads with this

I'll offer a prediction:

1. There will be an internal investigation.
2. The thug cops will cleared of any wrongdoing whatsoever by their brethren.
3. The same thug cops will be in the Grove next year for a repeat performance.

Really, does this shit ever change?

That just goes to show you how lame Miami people are.. That would have NEVER happened in LA. straight up the crowd would have overtaken those 7 cops compared to the 200+ around. Talk talk talk.. that's all people do.

I for one wish we would close down Halloween once and for all. Stop all traffic accept for residential and get this very dangerous event out of our village all together. I know of no other city that would allow this type of mass unorganized event to take a strangehold of their streets and community but the Grove. And for what so the bars can have a good night selling liquor to already over toxicated visitors who are maybe using other illicit drugs as well. Oh and by the way they are wearing masks and costumes to disguise themselves.

Our good officers put themselves in harms way that night so they can make sure no fatalities or injuries befall them or any one else. I praise those officers who obviously had to wrestle that man to the ground and use restraints on him and physical force to comply with their requests. To bad the video was not shown from the angle where the man actually had a dangerous hold on another officer.

I would like to see the cops use a rubber hose on the obnoxious little punks like they did before all the political correct BS, just beat them bloody and send them home to their dumb parents with a lesson learned.

I personally dont like cops, they think they are better than everyone and think theyre superman. They feel real tough when they abuse people that cant fight back because youd end up in jail. Id love for a cop to pull off that shit on me one day and have the balls to put his badge down so i can whoop his ass. Gang unit printed on theyre shirts because thats what they are. A dirty gang of cops protected by the law to do what they want. In some way i can understand the police are provoked into these situations but they abuse their power.
