Kids and parents are getting ready to kick off 2010-11, and while they're organizing new backpacks, planning lunches and eagerly awaiting the first day of class, chances are they're making some big promises to themselves.

They'll be on time. Make more friends. Text less (that's on the parental wish list).

Resolutions aren't just for New Year's.

We talked to students of all ages and parents about their hopes for the new school year.

``I want to be on time and wake up earlier so we can eat a proper breakfast.''

-- Candice Medina of Hollywood, whose daughter Danica, 3, will be in PK-3 at Church by the Sea in Fort Lauderdale.

``I want to have their homework done by Wednesday and read with both of my children every night.''

-- Melissa Propper of Coral Springs, whose daughters Madison, 7, and Payton, 5, attend Westchester Springs in Coral Springs. The girls' resolutions: Payton said ``I'm going to use flash cards to learn sight words better.'' Madison wants to ``do a lot of science this year and a lot more reading projects.''

``I want no meltdowns.''

-- Jodie Bonasera of Coral Springs, whose son Jason attends Westchester Elementary in Coral Springs. Jason, 7, wants to ``make more friends and do fun projects.''

``I want to study more and get better grades. I want to do more drama.''

-- Lydia Medore, 11, of Boca Raton, a sixth-grader at Spanish River Christian in Boca.

``I want to do more art projects.''

-- Jillian Schlenk, 6, who will start first grade at Parkside Elementary in Coral Springs.

``I will love math and making friends. I will try really hard to read books to help me grow up.''

``I want to have less work and more fun.''

-- Chloe Gardner, 9, fourth-grader at Pembroke Pines Charter.

``I want to see my friends. I don't know what to expect in third grade.''

-- Paige Shrewsbury, 8, Pembroke Pines Charter.

``I want to learn more social studies.''

-- Olivia Shrewsbury, 10, a Pembroke Pines Charter fifth-grader who wants to be a paleontologist or an archaeologist.

``I want to be normal, not crazy.''

-- Katriana Verret, 9, who starts fourth grade at a new school, the Beachside Montessori Village in Hollywood.

``I want to get out of school early!''

-- Caden Verret, 7, and a second-grader at Beachside Montessori.

``I want to do better overall and study harder. I want to excel. . . . I want to do well on the SAT and the ACT. I also want to find a balance, so I can relax and hang out with friends.''

-- Gil Goldstein, 16, of Hollywood, who will be a junior at Weinbaum Yeshiva High School in Boca Raton.

``I don't want to procrastinate for projects and homework. I want to keep my grades up and not let them fall. I want to be active in the school and join different clubs and activities.''

-- Alejandra Gomez, 16, who will be moving to New Jersey for her junior year. She also resolves to ``make new friends and definitely keep in touch with all of my old friends.''
