FIU med students prepare to help families in need

MIAMI HERALD STAFF

Florida International University medical and nursing students will begin training on home visits to help needy families in North Miami-Dade.

Students will begin their training on Wednesday with mock home visit scenarios under the guidance of United HomeCare Services home care professionals. The session is meant to teach students how to approach and assess patients in their homes.

The session marks the beginning of the medical school's Green Family NeighborhoodHELP (Health Education Learning Program). The program is designed to educate students on the impact that the home's environment has on a patient's health.

"The students are there to learn and make a difference in the community,'' said FIU spokesperson Maydel Santana-Bravo.

Once the students complete training, a home visit team will make monthly visits to assigned households over the next three years.

An FIU faculty member will lead each team, which will consist of a second-year medical student, a finishing nursing student and a social work student.

"Primary care physicians are in great need,'' said Vianca Stubbs, director of research and innovation for United HomeCare Services. "And through NeighborhoodHELP, we are helping our neighbors in need by working together.''

In the future, Santana-Bravo said, the program may include public health and education students.
