If you?re a struggling sophomore at Florida Atlantic University, help is on the way.

FAU has received a $1.6 million U.S. Department of Education grant to support at-risk second year students. The university will create a program called ?Academic and Career Enhancement for Second-year Students,? which targets those most likely to drop out.

?We have a diverse student population and each and every student is unique,? President Mary Jane Saunders said. ?We are invested in ensuring their success, and with this grant, we will be able to assist them through increased access to tutoring, academic and skills workshops, and individualized academic and career advising.?

FAU will create five full-time positions, which will be involved in such areas as intensive advising, tutoring, and major and career counseling. Students will meet regularly with their advisers and participate in time-management and study skills workshops. Tutoring will be available for courses where students have previously failed or ones that have been historically difficult for students.

Among the students targeted will be ones on academic suspension or probation, those with GPAs below 2.5 and those entering their second fall semester with undeclared majors. FAU officials say career indecision is a major factor in students dropping out.

The grant will be distributed over a five-year period.
